A faith that holds when everything shakes

Sooner or later, the ground shakes for all of us. A bill you can't cover. A word from the doctor. A worry that finds you at two in the morning and won't leave. I have lived long enough to tell you that a shaking season comes for everyone — and I have lived long enough to tell you, too, that a real faith can hold you all the way through it.

I know something about it. I grew up with ten of us in a one-room shack on a muddy road, hauling water four miles from the creek when the cistern gave out, my father bringing home forty-eight dollars a week as a florist. By every measure the world uses, we had reason to worry. And yet we were fed, we were loved, and we were held. Looking back now, I can see plainly what I couldn't always see then: God was providing the whole time.

He is telling us not to worry about anything. He knows our needs before we do, and He has already made provision for us. That is the quiet foundation a lasting faith is built on — not the absence of trouble, but the presence of a Father who was already tending to you before you opened your eyes this morning.

Fear is a thief

It helps to understand what fear is really after. The enemy wants to steal your peace and hand you fear in its place. When we give in to that fear, we let go of the peace, the confidence, and the courage that were meant to keep us steady — and we hand the opposition room it was never supposed to have.

And fear doesn't stay put. It spreads — into your body, into your sleep, into the way you speak to the people you love. Worry has never once added a single day to anyone's life or a single dollar to anyone's account. It only borrows tomorrow's trouble and charges you interest today. That is a poor bargain, and you don't have to keep making it.

Faith before you see it

Here is a hard and freeing truth I have had to learn slowly: we cannot please God without faith — and waiting until you see it done is not faith. Real faith loosens its grip and believes the matter is settled before the eyes confirm it. If there's an unwanted circumstance in front of you today, take it to God and release your faith over it. Believe it is answered before it looks answered. That is not pretending; it is trusting the One who cannot lie.

And when the hard times don't lift right away, understand that even they are doing something in you. Enduring difficult times with patience and without complaining grows moral character and integrity in a person. God will speak to you through it, if you'll stay soft enough to listen.

Notice He does not promise a life with no storms. He promises that He has already overcome the very thing you are afraid of. Those of us who stand on the truth will still meet trouble — but in time, our troubles keep turning into testimonies.

Standing in the storm

So what do you do while the wind is still blowing? You stand. You thank God for sheltering you in the storm even before the sky clears. You keep praying, you believe you will win, and you do not stop. I have said it over my own family for years, in dry seasons and full ones alike: our best days are ahead of us. I believe that — not because life has been easy, but because I have watched God take one hard thing after another and work it together for good.

When the light feels far off

There are stretches where God feels distant and the light seems slow to come. Do not read His quiet as His absence. Invite Him in — He hears you when you call, and when you need courage He will give it to you. Jesus does not stand back from our trouble; He steps into it, and where He steps He brings light, comfort, and hope.

That is a promise you can lean your whole weight on. It is not a demand to figure things out and then call Him — it is a welcome to call on Him in the day of trouble, in the very middle of it, before anything is fixed. He counts that kind of dependence as faith, and He answers it.

A faith that holds is not a faith that never trembles. It is a faith anchored to the God who feeds the birds of the air and knows the number of hairs on your head. Anchor yourself there, and then let the ground shake if it must. When it finally settles, you will find you are still standing.
